The Continuing Weight Loss Journey – After Weight Loss Ends

I’ve been in maintenance for going on 3 years this month. I lost, at my max, 115 lbs, and have kept off more than 100 lbs of that this entire time. That 10 lb regain? A lot of it is muscle, because I’m a physically smaller size than I was when I hit my goal of 160 lbs. While I’m extremely proud of my weight loss and keeping it off, losing the weight has been the hardest part.

I’ve been overweight from birth, so being at a healthy weight for the first time ever at 33 years old was a strange and wonderful thing. I quickly realized, however, that my brain had adapted quite well to being the fat girl. You know how they say you didn’t gain weight overnight so don’t expect it to come off overnight? The same is true for your mental state. You don’t just wake up on the day you hit your goal weight and think like someone who’s never been fat. Your brain is still a fat girl. A fat girl in a fit girl’s body.

As I mentioned earlier, it’s been 3 years since I hit my goal weight. In those three years I’ve gone from only walking to someone who works out 5 days a week. I can do one arm swings with a 40lb kettlebell. I can deadlift with 52.5lbs per hand (and probably more but that’s as heavy as my dumbbells get). I have gone from the baggiest clothes possible to preferring slimmer fit clothes, from covering up on the beach to owning FOUR bikinis.

I call this my uncomfortable pose.

Now let me tell you: wearing a bikini on the beach at the Jersey Shore in the middle of peak season is terrifying. I can’t speak for the never-fat, but I felt scared and exposed and paranoid that people were whispering about me behind my back about how grotesque I was. This is the third year I’ve worn a bikini to the beach, and this is the first time I really felt like something changed inside me.

This past Sunday The Hubs and I spent the afternoon and evening in Ocean City, NJ. The weather was blissfully perfect and we found a nice spot on the packed beach and I stripped down to just my bikini… and my anxiety set in. Were people staring? In a bad way? The Hubs assured me that was not the case. When we were done roasting ourselves I decided that I didn’t want to put my tee shirt back on because the sun was beating down something fierce. So I pulled my jean shorts up and folded my tee and stuck it in my bag. And at first I was really, REALLY self conscious. But after a while I started to not think about it. We walked the boardwalk and went into shops and just enjoyed the sights, sounds and smells of the ocean.

I put my tee back on to eat dinner, but when we got back outside it was just so wonderfully breezy and the temperature was perfect that I took it off again and just enjoyed the feeling of the sun and wind on my skin. And I stayed that way until we got back to the car at the end of the night.

I’m not saying my insecurities are gone now, far from it. But I think I crossed a threshold on Sunday. I think my brain is slowly catching up to my body, and I’m proud of that. I’ve come a really long way, and while there’s always someplace higher to go, I know I’m moving in the right direction. ❤

Ever have a few weeks where it feels like time is grains of sand in a raging windstorm and as hard as you try to grab onto the sand it just slips through your fingers?

Yeah.

I’m not sure if I mentioned it here before but I’ve been seeing an online counselor and dealing with a bunch of really old stuff that I thought was resolved but isn’t, and getting help dealing with a current situation. I’m also working on building up a bit of savings, so I’m working extra side jobs to help pad the piggy bank (more on that later).

I’ve been forcing myself to relax more, and I found myself semi-addicted to the video game The Elder Scrolls: Legends, which I can NEVER remember the name of when I try to tell people about it. I seriously have to Google it every time, how silly is that? Anyway it’s a super fun deck-building game like Magic: The Gathering or Hearthstone and it’s free, so that’s what I’m playing.

At the end of June I applied to be a Lyft driver, but it took two full weeks to get approved (I think my application fell through the cracks somehow because only my driver photo wasn’t approved almost immediately and within minutes of me putting in a support request they approved me) and I haven’t given any rides yet because I’ve been too busy doing other things! Hopefully this weekend.

July’s book club book.

This week I started donating plasma which actually pays fairly well. Yes, you can sell plasma but not platelets or whole blood. It’s actually not bad because most of it is just waiting around or answering questions: the actual donation takes about 30 minutes and I just read my book for sci-fi book club or texted on my phone. It’d be nice if I could have written this blog there but I can only use one hand at a time, ha.

And speaking of book club books, month’s ago we ready the first book of The Expanse series, Leviathan Wakes. WELL DANG IT THOSE BOOKS ARE GOOD so I’m reading book 3, Abbadon’s Gate. THERE ARE 9+ BOOKS IN THE SERIES AND DANG IT I’M GOING TO READ THEM ALL. So I’m making myself read Panacea at my plasma donations and reading The Expanse at night. Compromise, right?

edge-3.jpgAlso, last night I kinda sorta joined a gym! It opens in the fall but it’s a 5,000sf facility with weights, kettlebells, classes, cardio, cardio cinema, tanning, massage chairs and a SAUNA. Oh and a smoothie bar. And I can bring a guest EVERY TIME. They even have a WEIGHT SLED. I’ll finally be able to deadlift more than 105 lbs!

I’m still working on my makeup business, too. A girl’s gotta hustle, amirite?! If you are interested in that I’m on Facebook or you can follow my additional Instagram account:

So anyway, I’m scatterbrained right now, but I’m still working on my cookbook and I’m still thinking of new, fun recipes to share with you! I hope you’re all well and I am still here and thinking of you.

The Beauty of Shenandoah – Day Two

Monday we started our day with a sturdy breakfast provided by our hotel (The Hampton Inn – Harrisonburg is really awesome, you guys, for reals) and immediately headed back into Shenandoah National Park for a different hike. This hike was just south of Big Meadows, so we stopped there again to use the facilities and drove back south to Milam Gap Overlook, where we parked. I had worn the brightest colors I could (hey I have a lot of running clothes) so that people could see me coming! Here I am “hiding” behind a tree:

The trailhead for Mill Prong Trail to Rapidan Camp was just across Skyline Drive. We were really surprised to discover how different this trail was from the previous day’s trail: it was quieter/less populated, and instead of many waterfalls (there were a few) we got stream crossings. It was much less steep than the previous day’s too.

At first, the stream crossings intimidated me, particularly the first one. I was terrified of slipping and hurting myself for some reason. Once I got over the first big rock I gained more confidence and didn’t have as much trouble. It was cooler on Monday, too, I never felt the need to take off my obnoxious orange shirt to just wear a tank top.

The trail wound slowly down, meandering back and forth across the stream until we got to Big Rock Falls.

Finally at the end of the trail we reached Rapidan Camp. This was the place Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover spent their summers. Most of the camp is long gone, but a few cabins remain. The Prime Minister’s Cabin (where British Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald would sometimes stay) is now a museum and the Brown House has been restored to it’s original design. We couldn’t go inside the Brown House, but peeked through the windows to discover Southwestern style decor.

The Prime Minister’s Cabin

We spent quite a bit of time in the Prime Minister’s Cabin, however, and I found myself fascinated by Lou Henry Hoover. A thoroughly modern woman despite being born in the latter half of the 19th century, she was the first female geology major at Stanford University, graduating with a B.A. in geology in 1898.

She said that when she was FIFTEEN years old? How cool is that?! She also was the key player in designing Rapidan Camp as well as overseeing its construction. There was even a list of rules for the camp:

Make sure you tell a Filipino boy beforehand.

Wildlife was much less prominent than the day before but we did see a little frog on our way out!

After the hike out of Rapidan Camp we headed back to our hotel and cleaned ourselves up and headed out to Staunton, Virgina to check out the little town. Unfortunately many things were closed after 5 pm on a Monday, but we managed to find a pho place! The broth at Snapdragon Pho was so good I didn’t need to add anything to it at all.

I ordered the special (steak, brisket, shank, buttery soft tendon and Vietnamese meatballs), because I can’t pass on eating beef tendon, ever. Susan got the steak, and we split steak summer rolls. (What can I say, we’re ladies who like us some beef!)

20170626_180217We wandered around and found the Shakespearean Blackfriars Playhouse, too! Staunton also has an amazing used/vintage book store. I had a blast browsing through all the vintage cookbooks.

We also stopped and got THE MOST AMAZING GELATO at The Split Banana. I had a scoop of amazing hazelnut and a scoop of tiramisu. Sue had a hot fudge sundae with brownie blast and vanilla, topped with homemade hot fudge and handmade whipped cream. TO DIE FOR. They even had a board with a listing of their ingredient sources. Great finds in Staunton!

On the way back to the hotel we weren’t quite ready to go back. It was a gorgeous night, and we decided to drive around check out downtown Harrisonburg. We discovered James Madison University, and decided to go on adventure to find Eastern Mennonite University. I bet you didn’t know that Eastern Mennonite University has men’s and women’s basketball, did you?

20170626_194755-1Sadly our trip was almost at an end, but we had amazing weather, incredible food and an all around fabulous time while in Shenandoah, and we’re already planning on going back next year.
