Fun with Apps: Shopkick

Author’s note: I am in no way being compensated for writing this review and everything in it is my own personal opinion.

ShopKick_Logo_Squared_jpg_280x280_crop_q95I’ve talked about shopping and rebate apps I use before, but recently I’ve discovered a new app called Shopkick. Shopkick’s primary use seems to be earning “kicks” by walking into stores, scanning items on that store’s list, and purchasing items. When you get enough kicks, you can roll them out into a gift card or items, or even use them to donate to charities like Feeding America or the American Red Cross.

Using Shopkick is almost like a scavenger hunt: each store gives you a list of items to scan each week, and you get kicks for the ones you scan, and each item has a different amount of kicks you can earn. It’s fun, and it costs you nothing. You only need 500 kicks to  earn a $2 gift card to Walmart of Target, and that doesn’t take very long at all, especially if you’re good at finding the items to scan.

Screenshot_2015-12-22-15-34-28When you’re ready to cash in your kicks, you get e-mailed a digital gift card. I haven’t tried this yet, but I’ll update you when I do!

(NOTE: There have been some bad reviews on this app saying that if you complain to their “customer service” department they will block you from using the app and take your kicks. Since this app is free and you don’t have to purchase anything to get gift cards, I think I’ll continue to use it and see what happens.)

Do you use Shopkick? Any tips/tricks I should know?

A Few More of My Favorite Things

Here’s yet another short list of stuff I’m totally obsessed with right now!

Blindspot

O.M.G. Okay, look. I love Thor in the Marvel movies, but I was never a fan of Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif. Some actors just can’t do fantasy or period pieces. So when I saw she was going to be in a new show on NBC, I was curious because the premise was awesome,  but I didn’t have super high expectations. I am SO happy I was wrong. Here’s the premise:

“A woman with no memories of her past (Jane Doe), is found naked in Times Square with her body fully covered in intricate tattoos. Her discovery sets off a vast and complex mystery that immediately ignites the attention of the FBI, which begins to follow the road map of her tattoos into a larger conspiracy of crime, while bringing her closer to discovering the truth about her identity.”

What they don’t tell you is she’s found by the FBI and all sorts of awesome mystery shit happens. I wouldn’t ever describe myself as liking police procedurals but DAMN this is a good show! I whine a little when I go to check for new episodes and it hasn’t aired yet! And I just watched the “Fall Finale” (which I think is the biggest load of crap television has ever invented) and it was SO GOOD and now I have to wait until frickin’ FEBRUARY to watch the next episode!!! Ahhh!

BONUS: Francois Arnaud is a long term guest star in it. I’d watch him brood any day.

John Freida Beach Blonde Sea Waves Sea Salt Spray

I am SUPER LAZY when it comes to styling my hair. Heck, I only get a haircut twice a year, because for some reason getting a haircut is a source of anxiety for me. I even go to a barber shop that’s full of comic book paraphrenalia because the idea of going to some salon where I’m going to be overcharged for a mediocre cut because they spent all their money on the decor, and where I inevitably feel like I don’t fit in. I like the bare concrete floor and cinderblock walks of the barber shop, and I like that they play crude comedies on the tv instead of The View (I HATE The View). Wow, I went quite on the tangent there. ANYWAY, I’m lazy with my hair. I’ll spend 15 minutes doing my makeup, but throw my hair up in a messy bun because I’m out of time. Enter sea salt spray!

So I wash my hair, towel dry, then air dry until it’s just barely damp, then I spray my hair liberally, using my hands to scrunch my hair up. It gives my naturally wavy hair more definition while killing the frizz factor, and it smells AMAZING. Seriously, if you could bottle the scent of ocean breeze and coconut scented sunscreen, this is what it would smell like: heaven.

Winter Squash

Be it acorn, butternut or pumpkin, I truly love winter squash. I love it roasted in olive oil, in a savory stew, sweet with maple syrup, brown sugar and butter, used to top cottage pie instead of mashed potatoes, made into dessert. Just the other night I made this amazeballs recipe from Stupid Easy Paleo (although I used acorn squash because I’ve never seen delicata in my locale):

img_20151124_210959.jpgAnd if you recall, not long ago I raged against pumpkin spice everything by making a spicy Pumpkin and Chickpea Stew that I adored. Pumpkin pie has always been one of my favorite desserts, and I guarantee you I ate plenty of it yesterday! And a bonus? Squash is crazy good for you.

So that’s what I’m busy lovin’ right now. What are you lovin’ right now? 🙂

Happy Black Friday, I’m off to work!

November Love With Food Box

The theme of November’s Love with Food box was Thank-Full, and these treats were certainly satisfying!

Shiela G’s Salted Caramel Brownie Brittle

IMG_20151115_184939501The Hubs and I have had and loved Brownie Brittle before (OH HEY Love With Food, you sent us this EXACT FLAVOR in June), so this was no exception. It’s like a brownie in a dipable chip format. Yum!

Monbana Dark Chocolate Squares & Milk Chocolate Squares

IMG_20151115_184817007_HDRI ate these two days ago and as I’m writing this my mouth is watering. I prefer dark chocolate, and the dark chocolate square was rich and dark without being bitter. It was similar in flavor to my favorite eating chocolate, Ghirardelli 60%. Nuanced and coated the tongue perfectly. I’m not a fan of milk chocolate, but the texture of this milk chocolate square was divine. Velvety and smooooth!

Lotus Bakeries Biscoff Cookies

IMG_20151115_184801023Okay, this is my first foray into the pop culture phenomenon that is Biscoff. I first heard about Biscoff when someone said the words “cookie butter”. (Yes, this is apparently the new Nutella, which was the new peanut butter.) But I get it. Biscoff cookies are delicious, and similar to a cinnamon graham cracker flavor. Would taste delicious with a cup of coffee or tea.

Dilettante Chocolates Raspberry TruffleCremes in Milk Chocolate No. 30

IMG_20151115_184827327_HDRAgain, not a huge fan of milk chocolate, but the raspberry flavor in this was good. Didn’t blow my mind, but I wouldn’t turn one down if someone handed it to me!

Back to Nature Honey Graham Sticks

IMG_20151115_184924158Okay, these taste like your average every day graham cracker, and I like graham crackers. But what makes these great is the shape. Imagine dipping these in Nutella or peanut butter?! Yum!

Dirty Sweet Potato Chips

IMG_20151115_184950668_HDRI love sweet potato chips, and these were good ones. Great texture, great flavor, not greasy at all. Yum!

David’s Tea

IMG_20151115_184913732I’m currently sipping the Forever Nuts flavor, and it’s really delicious! It’s perfect for the transition from fall to winter, with hints of cinnamon, almond and maybe even vanilla caressing my nose like a warm fire. There’s a creaminess to it that I really love, and I am NOT a fan of herbal teas! Way to go, DavidsTea!

Bello Rustico’s Sesame Tocchetti

IMG_20151115_184932568_HDRThe Hubs ate these, and says they were very tasty sesame breadsticks. He really likes sesame AND bread, so I’m not sad I missed them.

Bonus Item: Turbinado Natural Cane Sugar by Maui Brand

IMG_20151115_184837061I haven’t tried this yet, because I don’t add sugar to my tea, but you can’t go wrong with turbinado sugar!

Thanks Love with Food for another delicious snack box! Can’t wait to try December’s box!
